Victoria’s first draft Joint Management Plan released for public consultation

Gippsland’s Gunaikurnai people and the Victorian Government have reached an historic milestone with the release of the state’s first ever draft Joint Management Plan. The plan marks the culmination of three years’ work led by the Gunaikurnai Traditional Land Owner Management Board (GKTOLMB) in close partnership with the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC), Victorian Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria.

Gippsland’s first Gunaikurnai Joint Management Plan takes shape

A first draft of Gippsland’s first Joint Management Plan is nearing completion and is planned to be released for community consultation before the end of the year. The landmark plan, led by the Gunaikurnai Traditional Land Owner Management Board (GKTOLMB), has been in the making for three years following the Federal Court’s historic decision of October 2010 which recognised the Gunaikurnai’s native title rights over much of Gippsland, and the Victorian Government’s Recognition and Settlement Agreement with the Gunaikurnai people.

Sperm Whale Head visitor area upgrade highlights the benefits of joint management

Work is progressing on the upgrade of the Point Wilson Sperm Whale Head day visitor area, in the Lakes National Park. GLaWAC is leading the delivery of this project, working together with Parks Victoria under the joint management partnership, bringing together skills and experience from both organisations to achieve an enhanced visitor experience and improved cultural value outcomes.

Fire workshop reignites the flame for cultural practices

The Gunaikurnai TOLMB was pleased to support GLaWAC in sending three Joint Management (JM) Rangers and Natural Resource Management (NRM) team members to Cape York to attend the recent National Indigenous Fire Workshop. Mick Farnham, Kobi Cook and Dylan Davies-Hood made the trek north last month to learn more about Aboriginal fire management, along with other attendees from around Australia.

Joint management plan development update
