Gunaikurnai Planning Meetings

Indigenous consultants Phil Egan and Peter Hood, (a Gunaikurnai man), and their team are currently travelling through Gippsland to meet with Gunaikurnai people to discuss the planning for joint management of 10 parks and reserves in Gippsland.

They have already held several meetings throughout May and met with key groups, including the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation. The meetings and informal yarns continue throughout May and June.

The next meetings for the Gunaikurnai consultation on planning for joint management of 10 parks and reserves are scheduled for:

  • Tuesday 24 May, 2016: Bairnsdale Local Aboriginal Network, at St Mary’s Hall, Bairnsdale, 1pm-3pm after the LAJAC meeting.
  • Friday 3 June, 2016: Sale Local Aboriginal Network, more details to come.
  • Tuesday 14 June, 2016: Lake Tyers Local Aboriginal Network 14th June at the LTAT, 10:30- 12:30
  • Thursday 23 June, 2016: Community Forum, Lakes Entrance at the Mechanics Hall, 11am-3pm.

There are further meetings to be confirmed in June across Moe, Morwell, other Gippsland areas and in Melbourne.

Once the Traditional Owner consultation phase has ended in July, the Draft Plan will be prepared, reviewed by the partners (GLaWAC, DELWP and Parks Victoria). It then goes through a process of approval by the Gunaikurnai Traditional Owner Land Management Board and the DELWP Secretary before being released for a period of community consultation.
